ICI was hired as Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401’s construction manager in 2013 through a competitive selection process. The District was embarking on a long-term capital improvement plan and needed a school-experienced construction manager to act as a trusted partner and advisor throughout the process. ICI’s first undertaking with the District was a high school science wing. Throughout the preconstruction and construction process, our K-12 team demonstrated their commitment to partnering with CUSD 401 and the new wing has since transformed the science curriculum for the students.
Our commitment has continued since 2013 through several comprehensive educational improvement programs at each of the District’s facilities. Our partnership will reach a new pinnacle in 2022 as ICI undertakes the largest capital improvement program ever implemented by the District at Elmwood and John Mills Elementary Schools.
In March 2020, Elmwood Park voters approved a $55 million bond issue to renovate and add to Elmwood Elementary School and John Mills Elementary School. Sixty thousand square feet of John Mills Elementary School and 50,000 square feet of Elmwood Elementary will be renovated during the summers of 2022 and 2023.
The focus of the renovations at John Mills is updating all classrooms and replacing the HVAC systems. A 7,500 square foot addition will be constructed to house kindergarten, pre-k, and bilingual kindergarten. The renovations will also create focused grade level areas throughout the building allowing for future curriculum flexibility.
Elmwood Elementary will be completely reconfigured to allow grade level collaboration for the first time. The HVAC system will be replaced, all classrooms renovated, and toilet rooms will be upgraded. Two additions will house an elevator, new IT closets, improve egress, and provide a new location for the heating and cooling plant. The existing courtyard, currently the central heating and cooling plant, will be transformed into a place of learning for the students.
