In continuation of an existing partnership with Elmhurst CUSD 205, ICI replaced Field Elementary School with a new construction school built on the same site. After students vacated school for the summer in 2022, ICI demolished the existing 100+ year old building and began construction on the new 81,000 square foot facility.
The new school was built throughout 2022 and into 2023 and was ready for the start of the 2023-24 school year. Students displaced during construction attended neighboring schools within District 205. As construction manager, ICI worked with the District and Wight & Co. to develop a master plan for District-wide construction. All project were sequenced in a manner that allowed adequate space for all students as new facilities were built.
Field Elementary School includes twenty-four dedicated classrooms, several flexible spaces used for collaboration and small groups, secure main entrances and outdoor instruction areas. The gymnasium is designed to also serve as a tornado shelter.
The Learning Stair is located within the center of the building and allows for group presentations, one-on-one instruction and offers overflow seating from the cafeteria.
The site was reconfigured to allow for a more efficient student drop-off and pick-up process, while still allowing for ample play and recreation space.
Underground storm detention vaults were installed beneath the parking and play areas, capturing stormwater from the roof, pavement and permeable parking stalls. LEED Silver Certification was achieved by utilizing low-emitting construction materials, natural lighting and recycling demolition debris from the existing structure.
