In continuation of an existing partnership with Elmhurst CUSD 205, ICI is replacing Field Elementary School with a new construction school being built on the same site. After students vacated school for the summer in 2022, ICI demolished the existing building and began construction on the new 81,000 square foot facility.
The new school will be built throughout 2022 and into 2023 and will be ready for the start of the 2023-24 school year. Students displaced during construction are attending neighboring schools within District 205. As construction manager, ICI worked with the District and Wight & Co. to develop a master plan for District-wide construction. Construction projects are sequenced in a manner that allows adequate space for all students as new facilities are built.
Field Elementary School includes twenty-four dedicated classrooms, several flexible spaces used for collaboration and small groups, secured main entrances and outdoor instruction areas. The gymnasium is designed to also serve as a tornado shelter. The Learning Stair will be located within the center of the building and will allow for group presentations, one-on-one instruction and offer overflow seating from the cafeteria.
The site will be reconfigured to allow for a more efficient student drop-off and pick-up process, while still allowing for ample play and recreation space.
Underground storm detention vaults will be installed beneath the parking and play areas, capturing stormwater from the roof, pavement and permeable parking stalls.
LEED Silver is being pursued by utilizing low-emitting construction materials, natural lighting and recycling demolition debris from the existing structure.
